Welcome
The rumble of the music breaks the pre-dawn tranquillity. Pulses race as people spill out into the street. The music becomes deafeningly loud as partygoers jump up and whine down energetically behind their favourite band. This is street jamming! A time when people ‘let loose’. All chains are broken; all inhibitions forgotten. This is the ultimate celebration!
There are two major jams – J’ouvert and Last Lap. J’ouvert, as the name implies, marks the opening of the Summer Festival. Hundreds of people assemble in the Valley and proceed to the beach at Sandy Ground. The music unifies and transfixes them, transporting them to a realm of utter bliss.
Last Lap, on the other hand, signals the end of the festival. Despite this, spirits are high and hands and rags are even higher. People, sing. They shout. They chant. They dance. They celebrate their individual, and our collective, emancipation!
