Originating from humble beginnings during the period of slavery, calypso since its inception has been used as a form of communication. Today, within the Anguillian context, calypso has evolved into a festival of creativity, social commentary and exuberance. It lies at the core of our Carnival celebrations and serves as an avenue through which the artists can skillfully express themselves through grace and wit. Simply put, calypso has become a way for life for many calypsonians and supporters alike.

With each passing year, the momentum and lively spirit that mark the Calypso competition have been steadily rising. This is evidenced in the ever increasing number of individuals eager to participate in the famed  Calypso Monarch Competition. This enthusiasm has necessitated the division of the competition into three parts; the quarter-finals (a pre-carnival event), which usually has over twenty contestants, followed by the semi-finals (another pre-carnival event), during which the number is narrowed to eight and finally the Calypso Monarch competition which is one of the highlights of the Summer Festival week. Additionally, the calypso arena has been extended to include a Junior Calypso competition and a Female Calypso competition both of which have their numerous participants and supporters. Matter of fact, twice in the history of our competition a female has been graced with the title of Calypso Monarch. Undoubtedly, the future of Calypso in Anguilla looks bright!

As the Carnival season approaches Anguillians anxiously await the radio releases of the many Calypsonians. This gives them the opportunity to discuss and make an early pick of their favourite contenders. The myriad of topics varies from domestic violence to politics to youth to culture to a host of other themes. The artistry of our Calypsonians makes them some of the greatest that have ever entered the calypso arena. They are shining stars at home and abroad as proven by their accomplishments in regional competitions.

It is evident that calypso plays an integral role in our small society. It is ingrained in our culture. It is at the heart of each Anguillian. Though the tempo and lyrics of our calysonians may vary, what remains the same is the knowledge that each calypso is an embodiment of our cultural history.
