Rich in history and culture boat racing is in the blood of many Anguillians. It is the topic of many heated arguments. It is responsible for that unmistaken “glow”. It is the spark which ignites that deep rooted passion and love. To experience a boat race, particularly the August Monday and Thursday boat races, is indeed an experience. It’s thrilling, captivating, exhilarating. It’s special.
As its popularity increases, the preparations have become even more intense and meticulous. Much attention is given to even the most miniscule detail. For the captain, his crew and his supporters this is the race of their lives. Their sole satisfaction lies in obtaining that trophy and exciting the swarm of visitors and locals who have come to be a part of this grand event.
Boat racing is our national sport and the love and support it receives is nationwide. Whether you attend the race to hang out with family and friends, follow along in your own boat, take a dip in the sea, partake of the variety of dishes on sale or just model the latest outfit, you leave there fulfilled, cognizant in some way of the importance of boat racing to our community. As aptly captured in the lyrics of that sweet, sweet melody, “We love boat racing, we love boat racing!”
